28 November 2024
Aardiebytheseaside (NZ) (Downbytheseaside) only had herself to beat when she dominated the A$150,000 Group One Westral Mares Classic (2536m) at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
The NZB Standardbred graduate added to her incredible record when leading throughout to win Perth’s biggest mares feature for trainers Greg and Skye Bond and driver Deni Roberts.
Aardiebytheseaside and Roberts won a stern battle for the early lead but it got the New Zealand bred keen and ready to run in the middle stages.
Roberts admitted she was thrilled to have staved off her early challengers but she wasn’t quite as pleased when Aardiebytheseaside wanted to cut out sizzling sectionals in the lead.
“Good after I won the early battle, but not so good during the middle stages.”
“She definitely wanted to get rocking and rolling, but she is such a tough mare.”
While Aardiebytheseaside could have brought about her own defeat, in the end her incredible staying prowess shone through.
The victory took the mare’s record to nine wins in 11 starts in West Australia with $264,152 in earnings this year for the Bonds who race Aardiebytheseaside with Mike Tanev.
Along the way, the classy pacer has notched four Group Two and Group Three victories.
Roberts was thrilled to be able to cap that form by delivering a Group One victory for the mare, her first on Australian soil.
“I really wanted to get [a Group One] with her, so I am pretty happy.”
Aardiebytheseaside is now a trans-Tasman Group One winner, with her Westral Mares Classic victory going on her resume alongside her win in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2600m).
Her victory on Friday night took Aardiebytheseaside’s career earnings a mighty total of A$ $484,828.
