Dreams Are Free (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) showed his class at the right time in his record-breaking victory in the $50,000 Garrad’s Listed Sires Stakes Sophomore Classic (1700m) at Ashburton on Monday.
The NZB Standardbred graduate was barely asked for a serious effort by trainer-driver Nathan Williamson as he set a new New Zealand record for three-year-old colts and geldings over 1700m.
Dreams Are Free came into the Ashburton feature after two surprising defeats in lower-grade events.
But the pacer showed in his outstanding victory that with the benefit of race fitness he is the most potent force in the best company.
“He was more like himself today, it was a huge relief for him to go like that because he is such a good horse,” Williamson said.
Williamson buzzed forward with Dreams Are Free early before taking a trail behind Jeremiah (NZ) (Lazarus) and then speeding along the passing lane to win.
“He can definitely get off the gate and today I thought we would chance our arm and he was great today,” Williamson said.
Dreams Are Free was purchased for $60,000 by Brendan Fahy when he was offered among the Studholme Bloodstock draft at the 2022 National Yearling Sale at Christchurch.
Fahy races the brilliant three-year-old with the Dreams Are Free Syndicate.
The syndicate own a slot for the upcoming $500,000 The Velocity (1980m) on Show Day at the New Zealand Cup Carnival.
“We bought a slot with the aim of having a go at it, so it looks like we are on track,” Williamson said.
The trainer-driver said Dreams Are Free may trial or go straight into the half-million dollar feature following his brilliant Ashburton victory.
Jeremiah fought on gamely behind Dreams Are Free, running a meritorious second placing.
The pacer has been assured a place in The Velocity after being snapped up by slot-holders The Nick & Rick Syndicate.
Better Knuckle Up (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) ran a game third after working in the middle stages, ahead of Renegade (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) who completed first-four for NZB Standardbred graduates.
