Group Race Success in Australia for Justcallmemiki (NZ)
4 March 2025
Justcallmemiki (NZ) (Always B Miki) made the best possible start to his Australian career with victory in the A$50,000 Group Three Chandon Four-Year-Old Classic (2130m) at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
The NZB Standardbred graduate gave his Perth rivals a taste of what is to come with his dominant victory for trainers Greg and Skye Bond and driver Deni Roberts.
Greg Bond purchased the four-year-old for $20,000 from the Alabar draft at the 2021 National Weanling Sale at Auckland.
Justcallmemiki competed with merit in New Zealand before joining his owner in Western Australia.
Bond has been impressed with what he has seen from the NZB Standardbred since his arrival across the Tasman.
“He goes pretty good,” the trainer said.
“He looks like a horse that’ll be a nice one moving forward.”
The classy pacer never took a backwards step in his Australian debut, charging to an early lead before skipping clear of his rivals on the home turn.
Strong winds at Gloucester Park made for challenging conditions and few fast times on Friday night, but they clearly took little out of Justcallmemiki in his Group Three victory.
“The wind was very strong and was, in part, responsible for the slow lead time,” Roberts said.
“His gate speed was very good, and it was him on his own as I didn’t ask him to get out.”
“So, that was promising.”
Justcallmemiki sped home in slick sectionals to score by more than eight metres at short $1.80 win odds.
Bloodstock investors looking to secure a quality weanling with the scope to target feature events can do so at the 2025 National Weanling Sale at Karaka on Thursday 26 June.
In an exciting move, the sale will be held following the completion of NZB National Weanling Sale for thoroughbreds, to be held earlier the same day.
