3 January 2025

A scintillating burst of speed let Mo’unga (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) sign off his summer campaign with victory in the $35,000 Group Three Ranfurly Transport Central Otago Cup (2000m) at Omakau on Thursday.

The Regan Todd trained showed his versatility when exploding past his rivals to win for driver Robbie Close.

After performing with great merit through the spring and summer and establishing himself in New Zealand’s top echelon of aged pacers, Mo’unga will now head for a spell with big autumn targets in mind.

“He deserves a let up now, he has been up since the Hannon (Memorial) in September,” Todd said.

“Even though we have spaced his races along the way, he has been up and going for a while and this is the perfect time to give him a break.”
“The best thing about him is that he has gotten better right the way through.”
“It would be nice to think he would be able to keep improving.”
“We will aim him at the good races in Auckland in the autumn and see how he measures up.”

Mo’unga will have a plethora of Group One feature races to target in the north.

The pacer will be joined on his trip north by his star stablemate, Marketplace (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) who will have the Group One Northern Derby (2700m) in his sights.

Mo’unga was purchased for $100,000 Phil and Glenys Kennard’s PI & GJ Kennard Bloodstock Ltd when he was offered by Breckon Farms at the 2020 National Yearling Sale at Karaka.

The Kennards brought fellow owners Jim and Anne Gibbs, Gary and Keryn Woodham, Cameron Kirkwood, the Breckon Racing Syndicate into Mo’unga’s ownership, along with Todd.

Breckon Farms is preparing another outstanding draft for the 2025 National Yearling Sale at Auckland on January 15.

The Breckon Farms line up includes two fillies and two colts by champion stallion Bettor’s Delight (USA), the sire of Mo’unga.

Among them is Lot 104, a colt closely related to brilliant Group One performers King Of Swing (NZ) (Rocknroll Hanover) and Bettor Twist (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight).

The Breckon Farms draft also includes a close relation to Mo’unga in Lot 68. The blueblood youngster is by Lazarus (NZ), who is by Bettor’s Delight.

Lot 68 is from a half-sister to Mo’unga in Yea Baby (NZ) (Somebeachsomewhere).
