Penny Black Continues Golden Run In The Kerry Clarke
24 June 2025
The Michael Young-trained Penny Black (NZ) (Sweet Lou) continued her golden run of form at Gloucester Park last Friday night when winning the Group Three The Kerry Clarke (2130m).
The daughter of Sweet Lou was given no favours in the A$50,000 feature, sitting parked throughout before showing her trademark tenacity in the concluding stages to overpower stablemate Heavenly Gipsy (Rock N Roll Heave) to win by a half head.
It was the NZB Standardbred graduate’s fourth victory at stakes level at the Perth track this year, adding to her previous wins in the Group Three WASBA Breeders Stakes (2130m), Listed Race For The Roses (2503m) and Group Three The Lombardo Fillies And Mares (2536m).
Penny Black hails from the famed Black Watch family, with her dam, Tessa Rocks, being a full-sister to Group Three winner Crystal Sparkles.
She was offered through Dunvegan Lodge’s 2021 NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sale draft at Christchurch where she was passed in after failing to reach her $10,000 reserve.
She was subsequently entrusted to the care of Pukekohe trainer Jeremy Young before being sold to her current ownership group following her maiden win at Alexandra Park in December, 2023.
She made an instant impact in Western Australia, winning her first six starts, and she has continued to go from strength-to-strength.
She has now won 13 and placed in nine of her 30 career starts, and has earned nearly A$250,000 in prizemoney.
