Pinseeker (NZ) Explodes into Contention for The Race by Betcha

Pinseeker (NZ) (Downbytheseaside) won his way into New Zealand’s richest race with his commanding victory in the Hector’s Premium Gin Autumn Free-For-All (1980m) at Addington on Friday night.

The NZB Standardbred graduate left a talented field in his wake as he powered away to score by three and a half lengths for trainer-driver Jonny Cox.

Cox found himself in front soon after the start, after deciding to seize the opportunity to control the race when it presented itself.

And the results were devastating.

“It wasn’t really the game plan, there wasn’t as much gate speed as I had anticipated and when Rakero Rocket (NZ) (Rock N Roll Heaven) was in front he didn’t really look like he wanted to be there,” Cox said.

“I didn’t want to be parked and it sort of worked out both ways.”

The win was enough to capture the attention of Australian owner Joshua Davine.

Davine secured Michael Brennan Racing a slot in the upcoming $1,000,000 The Race by Betcha, before securing Pinseeker to run in the slot.

“Ourselves and the owners are really thrilled to be heading to The Race and we can’t thank Josh enough for it,” Cox said.

The son of Downbytheseaside will race for more than 230 times his purchase price when he competes at Cambridge on April 4.

The pacer was secured as a weanling by Southland owner Iain Wilson for just $4200 when he was offered among the Woodlands Stud draft at the 2020 All Age Sale. He has since earned $114,375 in stakes.

Wilson races Pinseeker with Peter Brinsdon, Jason Wood, Bernie McKone, Phil Stephens, Logan Boersma and Gary May.

Runner-up and fellow NZB Standardbred graduate Rakero Rocket is also off to The Race by Betcha.

The four-year-old is sure to benefit immensely from his Addington second placing after not starting since January.

Renegade (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) took third ahead of Vessem (NZ) (Vincent) in a first-four made up of NZB Standardbred graduates.
