Sonofamistery (NZ) (Sweet Lou) never gave his rivals a look in as he dominated the $52,000 Group Two Macca Lodge Kindergarten Stakes (1609m) at Wyndham on Sunday.
The NZB Standardbred graduate speared to an early lead which never looked like diminishing as he ran to an impressive victory for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer and driver Tim Williams.
Williams produced an outstanding tactical drive to set up Sonofamistery’s excellent win.
The reinsman controlled the early speed before letting his pacer’s brilliant turn of foot carry him to victory.
“He's got a high speed, so that’s going to stand him in good stead going forward,” Williams said.
“Obviously it’s a good string of his bow to be able to lead over a mile today.”
“But he does have that really quick speed, he's an exciting horse.”
Sonofamistery was purchased for $95,00 by Stonewall Stud from the Dancingonmoonlight draft at the 2024 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch.
Stonewall Stud race the pacer with John Fairweather and Graham Glen.
Many outstanding horses have gone on to race at the elite level after winning the time-honoured Kindergarten Stakes.
Hopes are high that Sonofamistery can do just that.
“He's still learning, he's still a green baby and just before the line he wanted to pull up,” Amanda Telfer said.
“He sort of does what he has to.”
The Stonewall Stud camp initially planned to drive Sonofamistery for his brilliant speed in Sunday’s feature.
But those plans quickly changed and the results could not have been better.
“Our plan before he went out was to hand up to the favourite but he never sort of came,” Telfer said.
“So, Tim drove him pretty good, he knows the horse inside out and he's done a great job.”
Four NZB Standardbred graduates contested the Group Two Kindergarten Stakes and they filled the first four placings.
Freeze Frame (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) produced an excellent debut, running second for trainers Cran and Chrissie Dalgety.
Special Occasion (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) worked hard before fighting on gamely to run third ahead of Buster Douglas (NZ) (Downbytheseaside).
